I thought it meant one of two things:

A) The camera was broken

B) The picture was taken, but someone lost it.

I felt much the same way. My biggest gripe with it (aside from some of the rather hammy acting) is that it's a good film but an exquisite book. And, while being an unfair comparison, it is one that I feel compelled to make. It's something that one has to put up with with all adaptations of Moore's work. I liked V For Vendetta as a movie, but wished that it had gone further, like the book did.

I have to say that I felt smug by seeing Watchmen on its day of release in the Cineworld in Northampton, which would be one of Moore's local cinemas. Didn't see him though, either watching the movie out of curiosity or picketing outside, angrily. More's the shame.

I bought LXG: 1910 and thought that it was bloody marvelous. And under £6? That's value you just can't beat. I'm a massive fan of the League (although, I must admit, I'm yet to read The Black Dossier) and Alan Moore in general. Nice reading stuff from an informed fan!

When Nate says "You can't take a picture of this. It's already gone" I interpretted it that what we were actually seeing might actually be one of Claire's memories, rather than reality, and as such she couldn't go back a take a photo of it.

On the DVD audio commentary I think Alan Ball said the shot of the Fishers waving goodbye to Claire from the porch was deliberatly out of focus to give the impression that they were already slipping into memory. I think Nate's line was used for the same effect, and as a hint to the end sequence that followed.
